Plus there was that whole "It was almost midnight" factor... I'd be hard pressed to describe anyone who was across the street and down a little ways from me in the middle of the night.
And, honestly, as you said they were being a bit rowdy. Most likely no matter what you did, or said differently (aside from rolling over and giving them what they asked for... but then there's the chance that would have continued, too) the outcome was likely going to be the same.
